Volkswagen debuts most powerful Golf with 300 PS GTI Clubsport

New model unveiled ahead of Nürburgring 24-hour race

Limited-edition Clubsport S produces 380 Nm of torque

Volkswagen has unveiled the new Golf GTI Clubsport, the most powerful model in the range with an output of 221 kW (300 PS). The new car was revealed on May 31 ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race, and Volkswagen says the updated Clubsport will be "the start of a true GTI weekend." On June 1, Volkswagen will unveil the 221 kW (300 PS) Golf GTI Clubsport in front of the Volkswagen fan community at the Nürburgring.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S, which produces 380 Nm at between 1850 and 5700 rpm, is a two-seater. It delivers its maximum performance of 228 kW (310 PS) at 5300 rpm. The Clubsport features a unique design of front bumper with a larger opening, plus flared side sills and a bigger rear wing.

In the case of the latest GTI Clubsport, that means a significant bump in performance over the standard GTI, with a new turbocharger upping the power output to 300 PS. The Golf GTI Clubsport will retain its power figures from the outgoing variant, putting down 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Golf GTI Clubsport doesn't look cheap, but it delivers precisely the sort of fun worthy of the badge.
