New USGS Tool Displays Recent Earthquakes Near You

Real-Time Tracking of Magnitude 2.5+ Earthquakes

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has launched a new web application, "The Latest Earthquake," which provides real-time and near-real-time information on magnitude 2.5+ earthquakes in the United States. Displayed as circles on a map, earthquakes are color-coded based on their age: red for events within the past hour, blue for events within the past day, and yellow for events within the past week.

Interactive Features and Detailed Information

Users can click or tap on the circles to access detailed information about each earthquake, including its magnitude, location, time of occurrence, and depth. The map also displays known hazardous faults and fault zones as brown lines. By utilizing the "Search Earthquakes Near You" feature, users can locate recent earthquakes within a specified radius of their current location.

This innovative tool provides up-to-date information on earthquake activity, facilitating informed decision-making and situational awareness for communities and individuals alike.
