This storm has prompted the SWPC to issue a Severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Thursday, May 9, 2024, indicating a potentially significant impact on Earth's magnetic field.

Deterministic and Probabilistic Forecasts for Next Three Days

According to SWPC's deterministic forecast, the storm is expected to peak at a Kp index of 8 between 03:00 and 06:00 UTC on Friday, May 10. The probabilistic forecast indicates a 70% chance of Kp reaching 8 or higher during this period.

The observed values of Ap (a measure of geomagnetic activity) and the deterministic Ap forecasts are available on the SWPC website. The current Kp index is 7, indicating severe geomagnetic activity.
